The Opportunity

Aecon Industrial brings seamless solutions to key clients through operational excellence and reliability. With the ability to self-perform across our diverse business offering and a strategic fabrication network, Aecon Industrial proactively and profitably manages projects across a diverse range of industrial business areas. (Renewable Energy, Natural Gas Distribution, Oil and Gas, Water, Mining, Cogeneration Energy, Chemical, etc.). Aecon Industrial is also known for the pioneering of prefabricated piping services to better manage site labour and the integration of specialized coating systems into the fabrication process.

Aecon Industrial currently has a full-time permanant position open for a Sr. Water Estimator, located in our Ellwood Office (Edmonton, AB). Reporting to the Cheif Estimator, the Sr. Water Estimator will be responsible for the generation of accurate and timely cost estimates for assigned water projects. They will deliver properly organized estimates, budgets and schedules, while managing Aecons risk.

What you'll do here:
  • Responsible for accuracy of bid cost to actual cost of work performed. Shared accountability for the overall financial performance of projects awarded
  • Analyzes documents, drawings, specifications, proposals, addendums in preparation for pricing
  • Performs any estimate related oral and/or written communications with clients
  • Reviewing project site prior to price preparation
  • Obtains input from Operations staff as appropriate
  • Performs quantity take-off from construction drawings where applicable
  • Obtains pricing from suppliers and Subcontractors, and incorporate into estimate
  • Formulates all costs for tender submission labour, equipment, material, rentals and subcontracts
  • Accountable for accuracy and completeness of tender submissions
  • Oversees the distribution of appropriate documentation appropriately upon award of project
  • Tracks, forecasts and reports weekly on the financial and operational performance of awarded projects and provides data for month-end reconciliations, where applicable
  • Manages Scope Changes as required
  • Coordinates invoicing / progress payment activities, where applicable
  • Maintains files and correspondence on active and completed projects
  • Collaborates with Operations to drive project success and learning
  • Drives Estimating process / procedure compliance and consistency
  • Performs Post Bid / Post Project Analysis completion and that associated learning and communication takes place
  • Assists with RFPs and General Contract tender submissions
  • Assists with Prequalification submissions, RFQs and RFIs as required
  • Incorporates / complies with Aecons risk management policies and procedures
  • Drives positive relationships and serves as key contact with Clients, Consultants and key subcontractors
  • Protects all forms of proprietary information
  • Maintains Estimating data systems to ensure they are kept up to date
  • Assists in the training of newer Estimating staff as appropriate

What you bring to the team

  • 4-8 years of experience within the construction industry and within an estimating department specifically in the Water Industry.
  • Ability to read and understand construction drawings and documents
  • Thorough knowledge of contract language/Terms and Conditions/Bonding etc.
  • Thorough understanding of applicable industry standards
  • Consistently follows standards
  • A general knowledge of Contract/Owner/Engineer General Terms and Conditions;
  • Good understanding of drawings and ability to interpret schematics
  • Good knowledge of job cost fundamentals for typical items and scopes where design and/or schematics have been provided; and basic accounting/reporting principals is required
  • Established successful track record of winning bids that also demonstrate bid cost targets equal construction costs in all work scopes
  • Ability to interpret specifications as they pertain to all project scope, including risk.
  • Consistently performs on-site investigations of each tender, is able to interpret field constraints and incorporates findings into bids to ensure constructability.
