Designated Early Childhood Educator

Hourly Rate: $22.93/hour plus 4% vacation pay

Location: Peel Region (Mississauga, Brampton, Caledon, Bolton, Orangeville)

Work Schedule: 10 months/year, as required

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Designated Early Childhood Educator (DECE) is an integral member of the Catholic School team and is accountable to the Principal and/or designate. The DECE will partner with the classroom teacher and other resource and support services staff (see Notes 1 and 2) to set-up, plan for and provide a Catholic Education for all students; observe, monitor and assess the development of all students; maintain a healthy physical, emotional, social and spiritual learning environment; communicate with parents; and perform duties assigned by the Principal and/or designate with respect to the Kindergarten Program, in accordance with the Education Act, Board Policies and Procedures and the Mission of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

In collaboration with the Classroom Teacher the DECE will:

1. Create a warm, positive, faith-filled environment in the classroom that is reflective of Dufferin-Peel’s Catholic virtues and is conducive to children’s optimal growth and development;

2. Implement the Kindergarten Program by planning, developing and delivering daily play and inquiry based learning opportunities which support and promote the holistic development of children - spiritually, intellectually, emotionally and physically - with particular attention to individual student’s diverse needs, strengths, interests and stages of development in accordance with the Four Frames: • Belonging and contributing • Self-regulation and well-being • Demonstrating literacy and mathematics behaviours • Problem solving and innovating;

3. Follow the Kindergarten Program and other relevant documents developed by the Program Department, Ministry of Education and Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops;

4. Provide positive social and emotional learning experiences exemplified by Dufferin-Peel’s Catholic virtues to strengthen pro-social skill development including but not limited to sharing, problem solving, emotional regulation and cooperation;

5. Work with school resource staff as well as Board and community resource and support services staff to support the needs of diverse learners including students requiring an Individual Education Plan (IEP);

6. Ensure the activities required for project-based emergent curriculum and/or best practices are created, maintained and utilized;

7. Observe, monitor, record and assess students by using a variety of documentation methods including developmental checklists, anecdotal reports and portfolios;

8. Contribute to the completion of the initial Observation and the Kindergarten Communication of Learning;

9. Organize field trips and supervise students while on field trips;

10. Participate in the preparation and supervision of the classroom and playground areas;

11. Provide guidance and assistance to children with self-care, washroom routines, dressing, lunchtime and other nutritional activities and needs;

12. Participate in family/educator communications, regarding student assessments;

13. Respond to difficult situations and take appropriate action in stressful or emergent situations according to Board policies and procedures;

14. Observe Health and Safety Standards;

15. Maintain collaborative relationships with other community services providers working with children as directed by the Principal and/or designate;

16. Provide guidance to families, Supply staff, students and volunteers with respect to program planning, childcare and community resources;

17. Communicate in a sensitive, courteous manner with students, families, and the general public on pertinent information;

18. Maintain confidentiality including, but not limited to staff, student and family information;

19. Maintain appropriate records for students (e.g. Health, attendance, etc);

20. Attend staff meetings, appropriate school-level meetings and professional development activities, as required;

21. Complete other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Diploma or Degree in Early Childhood Education (E.C.E.); and

• Registered Member, in good standing with the College of Early Childhood Educators.

• Catholic Pastoral Reference (dated within the last 12 months)

EXPERIENCE:

• Minimum three years’ experience working as an Early Childhood Educator; • Experience in planning and implementing developmentally age appropriate programs; • Experience in working with various outreach and community development programs is an asset; • Experience working in a school system is an asset.
