The Ministry of Forests delivers holistic resource management services for British Columbians and manages specified Crown land and resources in a manner that embraces the economic, environmental and social goals of government.

The Research Vegetation Ecologist is a scientific advisor in the field of natural resource management. In this role, you conduct applied research to support science-based decision-making, provide professional advice related to vegetation ecology and classification, and lead multidisciplinary research projects. This position conducts ecosystem research, creates and maintains the biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification and its interpretations and applications, and communicates results to scientific and technical users. You will contribute your expertise to implementation of the Old Growth Strategic Review in the region.

To be successful in this position, you will use your professional expertise to draw conclusions on complex technical issues, using advanced analytical reasoning and judgement skills. You have strong written and oral communication skills, exercising professionalism, tact and diplomacy, allowing you to effectively liaise with industry clients, government agencies, First Nations, the public and diverse public interest groups.

Job Requirements:

  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as Registered Professional Forester (RPF) with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC), or as a Professional Agrologist (PAg) with the BC Institute of Agrologists (BCIA). Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the BC association within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • Thesis-based M.Sc. or higher, specializing in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Vegetation Ecology, Agriculture. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered.
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience working with BC’s Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification (BEC) system, or equivalent system, both in the field and in planning/desktop applications.
  • Demonstrated experience planning and implementing research projects.


Provisos:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence (or equivalent).
  • Must hold, or be willing and able to obtain, Level 1 First Aid Certification.
  • Must hold, or be willing and able to obtain, ATV Operator and Snow Machine Operator certifications.
  • Must be willing and physically able to work outdoors in remote areas and in a variety of conditions.
  • Willing and able to fly in planes and helicopters.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available.
This position can be located in either Cranbrook or Nelson.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
