The Ministry of Forests is responsible for stewardship of the province’s Crown land and natural resources. Overseeing a land base of 94.8 million hectares, the ministry makes, supports and advises on stewardship decisions for BC’s land and resources, and delivers services to provide environmental, economic, cultural and social benefits for all British Columbians.

Land use planning is one of a suite of approaches that the ministry can use to sustain important ecosystems and processes, resolve resource use issues and enhance certainty for environmental and economic goals. It is underpinned by socio-economic analyses, as well as assessment and monitoring of the condition of natural resource values. It offers an opportunity to advance reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, and can provide direction for forestry, energy development, ecosystem protection, recreation activities and other resource use decisions.

Working alongside the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, other natural resource agencies, First Nation governments and communities, land use planning will involve effective and thorough engagement with interested and affected parties.

The primary focus of the position is on forestry and ecosystem based management in the West Coast Region. This involves developing creative management solutions to strategic resource management issues. The position bridges environmental, social and economic disciplines of natural resource management to advance policy, ministry priorities and strategies, and operational delivery of stewardship outcomes. The Land and Resource Specialist (forestry oriented) will lead a diverse project team of multidisciplinary specialists across multiple agencies and is responsible for the management, coordination and delivery of strategic initiatives from initiation through to conclusion. The position deals with complex natural resource issues involving multiple stakeholders and First Nations.

The North Island - Central Coast Natural Resource District has been continually recognized as a Top 10 Work Unit in the BC Public Service and is home to a team of dedicated public servants tasked with managing diverse forest and natural resource values. Spanning a large geographic area over northern Vancouver Island, the mainland central coast and the many islands in between, the District includes a number of resource-dependent communities and much of the Great Bear Rainforest. This position is located in Port McNeill, an affordable and family-oriented community located on the northern tip of Vancouver Island and gateway to a wealth of awesome recreational activities.

Job Requirements:
***Preference will be given to fill this position with a Licensed Scientific Officer, REQ 110190; if a Licensed Scientific Officer is successful this competition will be cancelled.

• Bachelor’s Degree in a natural resource management related field (e.g., Forestry, Geography, or Natural Resource Management) or an equivalent combination of education/training plus, 3 or more years’ experience working in a natural resource discipline; OR Technical Diploma in a natural resource management related field (e.g., Forestry, Geography, or Natural Resource Management) or an equivalent combination of education/training plus, 5 or more years’ experience working in a natural resource discipline.
• Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Forest Technologist (RFT) with the Association of British Columbia Forest Professionals.
• Recent (within last 5 years) and relevant experience managing technical and/or professional staff in natural resource management in a direct, matrix or project management environment.
• Recent (within last 5 years) experience in a multiple stakeholders and partners environment understanding perspectives, conflicts and facilitating / developing solutions.
• Recent (within last 5 years) experience related to First Nations consultation, collaboration and relationship building.
  

Preference may be given to applicants who have:

• Experience with geospatial analysis and data.

• Valid B.C. Class 5 driver’s licence.
• To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures.

• To take in-house training and certification as required.
• To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
• To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.

This location receives a bi-weekly isolation allowance (add to pay).
