Bigstone Cree Nation Education Authority seeks a High School Vice Principal in Wabasca, Alberta. The Authority serves a total student population of approximately 500+ students. The Vice Principal is responsible for assisting the Principal in the day-to-day operations of the educational facility by ensuring that school policies, regulations, and procedures are observed and all students are supervised in a safe and welcoming learning environment. The Vice Principal will work with all school staff to provide leadership regarding the school’s curriculum, financial and procedural administration, scheduling, extracurricular activities, emergency operations, facilities management, and the management of conduct and discipline.

Primary Responsibilities Include

Instructional Support & Leadership

Curriculum and Pedagogy: Assist the Principal in supporting integrating Indigenous knowledge systems, perspectives, and culturally responsive teaching practices.

Teacher Guidance: Collaborate with teachers to implement differentiated instruction that addresses the unique needs of Indigenous learners and supports overall student success.

Professional Development: Participate in and contribute to professional development opportunities focused on Indigenous education, culturally responsive teaching, and decolonizing practices.

Cultural Leadership & Community Engagement

Relationship Building: Actively foster strong relationships with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, parents/guardians, and community members to enhance collaboration and student support.

Cultural Initiatives: Co-lead the development and implementation of culturally enriching programs, events, and activities that honour Indigenous traditions, values, and languages.

Inclusive Environment: Support the Principal in ensuring a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive school environment for Indigenous students, families, and staff.

Student Support & School Operations

Student Discipline and Well-being: Uphold school policies, address student behaviour concerns fairly, and promote a positive school climate that focuses on student well-being.

Attendance & Records: Assist with managing student attendance and working with PowerSchool/PASI to ensure accurate student records.

Administrative Support: Share administrative responsibilities with the Principal as needed, including scheduling, supervision, and other operational tasks.

BCNEA Partnership: Support the Principal in aligning with BCNEA goals and initiatives and contribute to strategic planning as needed.

Qualifications

Master's Degree in Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field.

Valid Alberta Leadership Quality Standard (LQS) certification or equivalent.

Experience as a teacher, preferably in a school with a significant Indigenous student population.

Demonstrated understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, perspectives, and educational best practices.

Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Ability to build positive relationships, resolve conflicts, and support student well-being.

Additional Desired Skills

Experience working directly with Indigenous communities.

Fluency or proficiency in an Indigenous language.

Knowledge of adolescent development and psychology.

Experience with administrative software (PowerSchool, PASI).
