The position can start as soon as summer 2024 and not later than Jan.1, 2025 depending on the successful candidate's availability. Nisga'a School District is located in the majestic and breathtakingly beautiful Nass valley in northwestern British Columbia. The school district office is approximately 1 hour north of Terrace, which has a regional airport. The district encompasses the traditional treaty territory of the Nisga'a Nation along the Nass River. People from around the world are drawn to Nisga'a lands to experience diverse outdoor explorations, including the volcano, Lava Bed Park, natural hot springs, fishing, hiking, hunting, kayaking/canoeing, biking, sledding, etc., as well as to encounter Nisga'a culture. The Nisga'a School District is currently partnered with MIT's Learning Lab, led by Peter Senge and Mette Boll. We are committed to ensuring equitable outcomes in a culturally respectful and engaging environment. This initiative, along with a Land Based Learning focus and engagement with provincial leaders in literacy and numeracy are supporting our professional learning and capacity building as we strive to transform learners' educational experiences. SD92 is creating the conditions for a modern learning experience interwoven with Nisga'a language, and culture, traditional knowledge and worldviews. Reporting to a five-member Board of Education, the Superintendent of Schools will lead the school district in its pursuit of success for all learners and will demonstrate the necessary skills to sustain a vibrant professional learning environment for all students and staff. The Superintendent works closely with the Nisga'a Lisims Government, local village governments and partner groups to align efforts so that students are living and learning in positive environments, preparing to flourish in the future. The successful candidate will have demonstrated: Passion and advocacy for student success throughout their career. Interest in and respect for First Nations culture and history. Curiosity and an inquiry oriented, research-based approach to improving learning. Understanding of how to effectively meet the learning needs of First Nations students. Skill in consulting and collaborating with partner groups and the broader community. Commitment to the core human values of Respect, Responsibility, Compassion, Honesty and Fairness. Fiscal responsibility and overall accountability. Success in working with an elected board to successfully meet the strategic plan goals of the organization. Understanding of current themes in instructional practices including inquiry-based learning, formative assessment, social emotional learning, and universal design for learning; and, Success in improving student results in Core Competencies, Curricular Competencies as well as Career Development areas. A Master's degree in a relevant field and successful senior educational leadership experience are required along with a current BC Teaching Certificate issued by the Teacher Regulation Branch.
