Description
The Radiation Safety Department at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre currently has a Regular Full-Time opportunity for a Health Physicist.
Reporting to the Manager of the Radiation Safety Department, the Health Physicist plays key role in the Radiation Safety team and is responsible for a broad range of support and technical expertise for the Radiation Safety at Sunnybrook.
Summary Of Duties:
- Ensuring that all activities involving radiation emitting devices are conducted in accordance with applicable regulations, policies and procedures.
- Performing structural shielding design / calculations for medical x-ray imaging facilities, evaluating existing lead shielding integrity and thickness.
- Providing radiation dose calculations and risk evaluation for patients and staff.
- Evaluating radiological imaging equipment performance.
- Monitoring and auditing compliance with relevant regulations, policies and procedures.
- Responding to, investigating and performing follow up of radiation safety related incidents/accidents.
- Developing, implementing and promoting safe practices and conducting audits of the practices.
- Developing and providing education and training in radiation safety.
- Preparing technical reports including but not limited to shielding reports, dose assessment from unplanned events, and hazards / environment assessments related to radiation emitting devices.
- Developing guidelines and documents specific to Sunnybrook employees and other stakeholders as required.
- Reviewing radiation exposure levels, maintain occupational exposure data.
- Performing other duties as required.
Qualifications / Skills:
- Master’s degree in Medical Physics, Health & Radiation Physics, Radiation Biology or Nuclear Physics or a combination of equivalent education and experience, preferred. At a minimum, Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution in a relevant scientific discipline is required
- Minimum 3 – 5 years of recent, related professional operational radiation safety experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience
- Knowledge and understanding of radiation protection philosophies, procedures, equipment and techniques. Demonstrated ability to operate related equipment
- Demonstrated technical expertise and knowledge of applicable legislation and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with both provincial and federal regulations involving radiation hazards and safety
- Knowledge of industry-recognized radiation safety organizations and practice standards
- Related scientific working experience in radiation physics, radiation protection instrumentation, x-ray emitting equipment would be an asset
- Must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills in investigating issues, writing reports, providing advice and guidance; work well independently and collaboratively with others in a team environment
- Experience with teaching and training of staff preferred
- Demonstrated organizational skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work to meet deadlines & objectives
- Proficiency with Excel, PowerPoint and Word and database applications
- Experience working in a large hospital environment would be an asset
