Overview

The Communications Assistant will support the Youth & Innovation Project (YouthInn) in its goal of using research findings to inform youth-focused public policy, funding, and programs by conceptualizing and designing various graphic and written products.This position will support YouthInn’s advancement of UW as a leading centre for research and knowledge mobilization on the positive social, environmental and economic impact young people, 15 to 25 years old, have on organizations, communities and systems.

Term: 9 months

Responsibilities

Communications

  • Develops visually compelling designs for YouthInn’s website, press releases, newsletters, infographics, social media graphics, and other digital assets
  • Assists with developing storylines for YouthInn’s website, infographics, press releases, newsletters, and other text-based products
  • Supports the redesign of YouthInn’s website
  • Assists in the development of the branding strategy for YouthInn based on the University of Waterloo’s branding guidelines.

Administration

  • Completes administrative tasks related to communications and government relations including basic research and organizational tasks
  • Documents all processes used to ensure activities can be repeated in future
  • Performs other related tasks as required
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, web design, digital media, or related field
  • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and other relevant design tools such as Canva, and MailChimp
  • Experience with motion graphics and animation techniques is an asset
  • Strong understanding of web design principles, HTML and CCS
  • Excellent visual design skills with a keen eye for typography, layout, color theory and accessible designs
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly organized with excellent time management skills to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent attention to detail, organized and proven track record of accuracy
  • Knowledge of and interest in youth engagement and/or youth employment is an asset
