Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre (RDRHC) is a 370 bed acute care hospital located in Red Deer, Alberta and is a regional referral center for Central Zone. The RDRHC offers both inpatient and outpatient services to a variety of medical, surgical, pediatric and women's health patients. This Unit Manager (UM) position involves a leadership role within Unit 25 (a 19 bed postpartum/newborn unit) and an ambulatory Breast Health Clinic here at RDRHC. This passionate team is seeking an enthusiastic leader who is familiar with the operational and nursing processes of Postpartum/Newborn care unit. The successful candidate will be joining a dynamic leadership team, which is always entertaining new and creative solutions, enjoys team camaraderie, and engages in shared learning and development. Reporting to the Director of the Women's & Children's services, the Unit Manager is a key leadership role supporting the goals and strategic direction of the Women's & Children's program as well as supporting the vision, mission and health/business plan of Alberta Health Services. The UM works in a decision-making and accountability relationship with the leadership team. Responsibilities of the Unit Manager include, but are not limited to: Knowledgeable clinical resource for unit and its multi-disciplinary team members provides strong supportive learning environment for unit staff and the obstetrical care team. Together with the Manager, Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE), AHNs and Medical Dyads create, plan and implement quality driven unit and site initiatives to promote safety, efficiency and growth. Day to day responsibilities of the unit include (but are not limited to) staffing, daily unit needs, support of patient care/flow, Coact initiatives, supplies, equipment, performance management, coaching/constructive conversations, recruitment/orientation, placement of student practicums and preceptors, RLS reviewing, and quality driven unit initiatives. The Unit Manager represents the unit/program and supports and collaborates with the other obstetrical sites within Central Zone.

Bachelor’s degree in a health related discipline. Current registration with the appropriate professional association. A minimum of 5 years of obstetrical experience in an organization of significant size, complexity and diversity with focus on postpartum and newborn care. Minimum two years previous experience in an informal or formal health services leadership role, ideally in a Women's and Children's environment, and/or in the provision of care to mothers and newborns. Experience in project planning, development, rollout and evaluation.

The successful incumbent will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: Consistently role models AHS values. Excellent analytical and decision-making skills, based on a framework of patient and family centered care, safety and quality improvement. Effective facilitator of proven change management principles within teams, and ability to motivate others to achieve organizational goals. Effective communication skills. Leadership skills, including demonstrated ability and comfort with decision making responsibilities, coaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others. Inter-professional and inter-personal conflict resolution and negotiation skills. Ability to manage human, financial and physical resources within an operating environment. Strong track record in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Self-directed when appropriate.

Masters of Nursing preferred. Certifications in, STORC, NRP, ACORN, Breastfeeding/Lactation Consultant an asset. Experience with Baby Friendly Initiative an asset.
