MANDATE

This role is enterprise-wide in scope and reports to the Director, Sustainability Strategy, Disclosure & Impact. The Senior Manager supports the Sustainability team in developing, maintaining and executing an effective internal control framework that supports voluntary and regulatory sustainability- and climate- disclosures. The Senior Manager will develop and implement policies, guidelines and practices to promote transparency, accuracy and consistency in calculation processes and reporting.

The holder of the role has subject matter expertise and draws on knowledge and experience in sustainability and climate change, regulatory compliance and internal controls. The role requires someone with strong problem solving, relationship building and change management, written and verbal communication and project management skills.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Collaborates with the ESG Controllership team to develop the governance framework and strengthen internal controls related to sustainability and climate disclosures.
  • Provides strategic input into business decisions and makes recommendations based on an understanding of the voluntary and regulatory sustainability and climate disclosure landscape.
  • Develops and acts as a subject-matter expert on relevant policies, directives, guidelines, tools and/or processes and regulatory reporting requirements.
  • Develops, maintains, monitors and continuously improves governance and control policies and procedures.
  • Ensures internal controls and processes are executed and meticulously documented to meet audit and compliance requirements.
  • Designs and implements robust data governance procedures and controls to produce transparent, accurate, consistent and auditable reporting.
  • Leads implementation, maintenance and continuous optimization of sustainability reporting software.
  • Leads change management with sustainability reporting content and data providers in relation to implementation of the control framework and sustainability software, including developing and executing the communication strategy, developing and delivering education and training, providing advice and guidance, and troubleshooting technical issues.
  • Builds effective professional relationships with business groups, internal/external stakeholders and trust with regulators.
  • Consults with stakeholders to improve consistency and transparency of control measurement/metrics and reporting.
  • Assesses and adapts existing operational programs and identifies opportunities for risk mitigation through proposing new controls or revising existing controls.
  • Supports the development of sustainability and climate disclosures to ensure reporting meets evolving regulatory requirements.
  • Manages the review and sign-off process for sustainability and climate reporting.
  • Monitors the effectiveness of the governance system and framework and recommends changes as required.
  • Assists with monitoring and interpreting new or changing regulations (e.g. OSFI B-15, ISSB/CSSB, CSRD, others) and assesses impacts to BMO’s disclosures and governance frameworks.
  • Leads engagement with BMO Corporate Audit and third-party assurance providers on relevant aspects of sustainability and climate programs and disclosures.
  • Actively participates in and represents BMO in relevant industry association working groups as such as those of the UNEP FI, Canadian Bankers Association, PCAF, NZBA, others.
  • Support preparation of presentations and messaging for senior management and executives on related topics, as needed.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Degree in a related field such as sustainability, climate, business, finance, accounting. Masters-level preferred.
  • 7+ years’ experience in a financial institution, audit/assurance, and/or a sustainability-related field is an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience with SOX type quality control testing frameworks.
  • Expert verbal and written communication skills.
  • Expert analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Strong relationship management skills and well-developed negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage cross-group collaboration and influence outcomes.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem solving skills and ability to navigate ambiguous situations.

  • Strong project management skills and ability to handle multiple tasks, change priorities and operate effectively in a fast paced environment

Compensation and Benefits:

$92,400.00 - $171,600.00

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
